Does Shopify charge a transaction fee on every sale?
Card processing fees apply to every sale on every plan — that is the payment provider’s cost, not Shopify’s. Shopify adds its own extra transaction fee only when you use a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments. With Shopify Payments, that extra fee is zero, so many stores pay only standard card processing.
How do I avoid Shopify transaction fees?
Use Shopify Payments as your payment provider. That removes Shopify’s additional transaction fee entirely on any plan; only ordinary card processing remains, which every platform charges. You would keep a third-party gateway only for a specific reason, such as an unsupported country or a negotiated rate that beats the combined cost.
Is it worth upgrading my plan to lower the fee?
Only past a break-even. Higher plans cut the third-party gateway fee (2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced) but cost more per month, and on Shopify Payments the fee is already zero.
